A history of suicidal behavior, especially recent behavior is one of the strongest predictors of further suicidal behavior including death by suicide. However, there is internal shame and external stigma associated with suicide attempts which prevents people from seeking help and receiving treatment. Jamie Brickhouse, author of the critically-acclaimed Dangerous When Wet: Booze, Sex, and My Mother and champion storyteller, will share his story as an alcoholic man in recovery and two-time suicide attempt survivor. His presentation is part darkly-comic storytelling and part call to action for recognizing the value of lived experience in preventing suicide and for more aggressively addressing the role of alcohol and substance use in suicidal behavior.
